There was an item on RTE News two days about about high-speed broadband in second level Irish schools. A question a few people have asked me before is – “What use can a school possibly make of that kind of bandwidth?”
So I found it particularly interesting to hear science teacher Frances Madders at Coláiste Bríde talking about their use of simulations for learning. And to hear her students say –
“It’s way more exciting than just looking at black …

“Epic, unreal, awesome”
Gortskehy National School in Co. Mayo has published a 48 minute video featuring teacher and students in a Q&A format discussing their experience of learning in MissionV and developing their (virtual) Science Week project.
The video starts with the children holding up cards describing their experience, the first of which read, “Epic, unreal, awesome”. We could say the same about their video 🙂
We were delighted to see our Science Week exhibition featured in the December issue of the Irish National Teachers Organization magazine. On page 18 Kate Rooney, who teaches at St. Clares Primary School in Harold’s Cross, wrote –
“MissionV is an innovative project where students use geometric building tools to collaboratively construct 3D replicas of real or fantasy structures within a virtual world. They can then program those objects to generate a fully interactive world. They communicate and plan their …
Best individual blog – Bernie Goldbach is on our board of directors but that’s not why we’re nominating him here. It’s more the other way around. Bernie has long been a huge influence on our work and continues to blog at high volume and quality even when Twitter, Facebook and Google+ have diluted the output of most other influencers.
Best individual tweeter – Fred Boss would deserve this nomination for running #edchatie alone, but he does far more than that. Keeping …
We were honoured to be represented at the Galway Science Festival on Sunday by Clontuskert National School who did a brilliant job presenting MissionV, not only to thousands of visitors but also national news broadcasters and even European Commissioners!
Our thanks to the teachers and students who put in so much time and effort, erected a wonderfully colourful stand and spoke eloquently about learning in a virtual world. See the Clontuskert blog for great photos and coverage.
Before delivering a presentation at the Asia-Europe Classroom Network conference in Dundalk last week we asked some teachers on the programme for their impressions, thus far, of teaching and learning in MissionV (remember, it’s only been 8 weeks since we started).
To say we were encouraged by the feedback is to put it mildly. In fact, we were bowled over by their reactions and would like to present you below with a summary –
Anne McMorrough, Teacher at St. Martin …

As one of 20 schools participating on the MissionV programme this year students at Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál are now preparing their Science Week virtual exhibit. We were delighted when they sent us a sneak peek today –
